New York State has now officially become the next state to greenlight sports wagering with the appropriate regulation and this is a milestone in its gaming history. Rivers Casino Resort was the first location to welcome wagers and local politicians were the first to place a bet in a legal manner. Gary Pretlow, chair of the state Assembly Racing and Wagering Committee supported the Seattle Mariners, whereas Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy placed a bet on the Boston Red Sox.
Exactly a year and two months after the United States Supreme Court gave its permission to all states to work on their own sports betting regulation, New York saw its first wager on sports event being place in Schenectady. It could be recalled that May 14, 2018 saw the overruling of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which made sports wagering legal and subject of further regulation.
State Officials Place First Bets
Over the past year, state lawmakers have been working on ways in which they could introduce legal sports wagering in a timely manner and make New York a popular destination for yet another reason. This activity was especially important for the state, as illegal wagering has shown an increase in popularity among New Yorkers and the cash bet had to be utilized more efficiently.
In addition to that, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were among the first states to legalize sports wagering both at brick-and-mortar casino venues and online, instantly becoming a more attractive gaming destination for New Yorkers due to their proximity. In this sense, New York had to make a move towards becoming more competitive.
Sports wagering legalization means that Canadians are more likely to make their way to the already appealing state and participate in betting action across the seven tribal and four commercial casino locations. All commercial casinos were racing to welcome the first bet on a state level, but Rivers Casino Resort managed to become the pioneer in this field.
Tioga Downs Comes Next
Right after the officials place their bets at Rivers Casino, locals were ready to make their first sports wagering bet on their favorite team and support both the sports and the gaming industry, ultimately improving the community. This is especially important with the upcoming football season that is guaranteed to make everyone’s summer hotter and make sports betting lounges even more attractive.
This week is a milestone one for another casino in New York – the Tioga Downs one, located in Nichols. July 17 is going to see the soft opening of this special area as the casino management wants to gauge the levels of interest towards this new offering. Official launch ceremony of the new betting zone would take place on July 19 at 2:30 p.m. It all looks good around the commercial casino venues, but there are also Native American ones.
The Oneida Indian Nation would launch sports wagering operation at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, and at Point Place Casino in Bridgeport on August 1. Its third casino location, Yellow Brick Road Casino in Chittenango would welcome sports wagers in the weeks after that. Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort recently announced it has teamed up with Canadian gaming giant The Stars Group for its future sports betting operation.
