New York State In-Person Sports Betting Launches August 1

New York State Gaming Commission has given the official green light to the set of rules governing wagering on sports events in the state’s four commercial casino venues. The seven tribal gambling facilities will also feature legal sports wagering on their premises, but for the time being online sports wagering will remain a possibility for a later date. All eleven casino venues that will launch operation of the new offering will have to wait for their wagering licenses, postponing the official launch.

The day has come for New York casino venues to receive green light for legal wagering on sports events. Ever since May 14, 2018, this possibility has been eyed both by local gaming enthusiasts and by casino operators willing to make the most of the situation. Last spring the United States Supreme Court overruled the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, making it possible for each state to launch legal sports betting in the most appropriate format and at a convenient time.

Sports Betting Launches Soon

This freedom was utilized successfully and in a timely manner by seven states as of now, but there are many still working on their sports betting regulations and ironing out all details around them. New York is one of the major markets that see increased illegal sports betting activity in the past few years.

Since it does not offer legal sports betting, many players are used to making their way to neighboring New Jersey, where the possibilities for betting and gambling are limitless both in brick-and-mortar facilities and online. This relocation of both players and their cash is something New York state is willing to eliminate with the official launch of legal sports wagering in the upcoming weeks.

Following the official approval of the set of rules guiding the budding field, local casino venues have to receive their licenses for offering sports betting. All of them are already working on reshaping their casino venues and adding special sports betting lounges to their premises in Upstate New York. Very soon, local players and people from across the world will have the chance to bet on various sports in their preferred casino venues.

Brick-and-Mortar Facilities Welcome Sports Wagering

Projections are that the new field would officially launch operation on August 1, giving all venues enough time to prepare for their first sports wagering enthusiasts. There are some details that need to be taken into account when wagering on sports events in New York. All activities should happen in person at the casino venues, as online wagering could ultimately be considered illegal within the borders of the state.

In addition to that, all wagers must be placed on professional sports leagues, as betting on collegiate tournaments is considered illegal under the newly approved regulation. For the time being, mobile sports wagering is among the biggest concerns for locals and state lawmakers, as this is going to increase the overall gaming revenue. Projections issued earlier this spring showed that online sports betting could amass more than US$1 billion, enough to boost the local economy and potentially surpass Nevada when it comes to sports wagering.

The approval of this language should happen before June 19, as this is when the New York State Legislature is going to adjourn, but as of now, the chances remain slim. The commercial casino venues welcoming sports betting enthusiast will be Resorts World Catskills in Sullivan County; del Lago Resort & Casino near Waterloo in the Finger Lakes; Tioga Downs west of Binghamton, and Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady. Big players such as DraftKings, Caesars Entertainment, bet365, and Paddy Power Betfair are going to enter the field.
