In-person sports betting in New York continues its quest to make the local field as attractive for potential players as possible, but the past month saw a slight dip in wagering revenue. As the New York State Gaming Commission recently revealed, the month of October saw a 4.4-percent drop in gaming revenue generated by the sportsbooks located in the four commercial casino resorts.
Ever since its launch this summer, sports wagering has gained the attention of more and more individuals willing to capitalize on it in a legal manner. July was the first month of commercial casino sports betting, allowing players across the state to place their wagers at the brick-and-mortar casino locations overseen by commercial casino operators and tribal ones alike.
Commercial Casinos Witness Sportsbook Surge
The month of October witnessed a 4.4-percent decrease in sports wagering revenue, as the financial reports of the commercial casinos recently revealed. Last month they managed to witness some US$2.2 million in gaming revenue, marking a slight drop when compared to September’s operation. Back then, casinos to the likes of Rivers Casino and Resort Schenectady, del Lago Resort and Casino, Resorts World Catskills, and Tioga Downs welcomed heftier wagers.
The September performance reached US$2.3 million in sportsbooks revenue, a special month thanks to the official launch of the NFL season, which gave it a significant boost. Ever since July, the sports betting revenue amassed reached US$5.7 million. Rivers Casino and Resort Schenectady remained the leading brick-and-mortar location for wagering on sports events throughout October, generating upwards of US$1 million.
This ranked the premium commercial casino location first among the four commercial casinos in New York State. The runner-up position when it comes to sports wagering performance was reserved for del Lago Resort and Casino and its US$572,410 in gaming revenue. DraftKings Sportsbook is the driving force of sports wagering on its premises, but it should be taken into account that the month of September was more successful.
Next Year Sees Mobile Wagering Action
The previous month was able to attract wagers amounting to US$836,929, a drop that could be addressed to the NFL season launch at the beginning of September and the increased wagering across the following weeks. Resorts World Catskills relies on sports wagering and poker offerings for remaining afloat amid a turbulent period. October saw sportsbook revenue reaching US$506,380, increasing from September’s US$381,210.
Tioga Downs once again saw less revenue than the previous month, with a total of US$152,696 in sports wagering revenue amassed in October. For the time being, mobile and online sports betting is considered illegal within New York State. January is about to see the Legislature convene, which would make it possible for mobile sports betting supporters to put a provision on the 2020 New York State budget.
Sen. Joseph Addabbo Jr. would work towards legal mobile sports betting over the upcoming months, as April is projected to see the anticipated report evaluating this new offering while taking into account the problem gambling rates statewide. Earlier this year, a bill eyeing mobile sports wagering received the Assembly’s approval, but could not make it far. Mobile and online sportsbooks are projected to make New York State competitive enough to its rivals New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
