British Columbia Lottery Corporation Brings Wagering to Delivery Rooms by Betting on 2019’s First Baby

British Columbia Lottery Corporation is on a constant pursuit of the most tempting offerings that could be introduced to its customers and one of the most recent ones is directly related to the first baby of 2019 to be born in the province. Right now everyone interested in betting on which hospital is going to hear the first baby for the year cry for the first time have the opportunity to do so via the Playnow platform overseen by the gaming company.

Every year the first baby to be born is a pivotal point for every province and for the country in general, which is why the BCLC is now willing to go above and beyond when it comes to betting on it. Players now have the chance to bet on the hospital which will welcome the first baby and for the time being the leading one it British Columbia Women’s Hospital located in Vancouver. This Thursday saw it having odds of 5/1, followed closely by the runner-up position occupied by Surrey Memorial Hospital. Its odds at the end of the day were 6/1.

Betting on Babies is Now Possible

The third position is now taken by Victoria General Hospital with its 8/1 which is also a good spot to be at. This means that the British Columbia Women’s Hospital has about 17-percent chance of welcoming the bundle of joy, whereas the second-best one has a 14-percent one. Everyone interested has until December 29 to make their choice and place a bet on the hospital location most probably to bring the first newborn to this world.

Probably one of the most crucial factors when making a decision such as this one is the level of popularity of a given medical facility, since the more people it welcomes, the greater chance of delivering the first baby on January 1. It could be recalled that the year 2018 brought the first baby of the year to Surrey Memorial Hospital. On January 1, Manpreet Kaur Nijjar gave birth to her first child and made the father Hardip Singh Shergill happier than ever.

The little girl weighed 3.8 kilos and entered all records for the year. The year before that, the first baby was welcomed at British Columbia Women’s Hospital, the current leader in the betting campaign. Dana Harlos gave birth to the little boy Monty weighing some 4 kilos. January 1 was a special day for her and her husband Peter Harlos, welcoming the new member of their family.

Opposers to the Idea also Voice Their Opinion

At the moment the locations least likely to welcome the first baby for this year are East Kootenay regional Hospital in Cranbrook, St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Comox, Penticton Regional Hospital, and Cowichan District Hospital. Soon after the BCLC announced this new campaign and the possibility to gamble on such a special event as giving birth to a new life, opposers of gambling were quick to judge the lottery commission and condemn the gaming offering as unethical.

The novelty bet now features as many as 24 hospital locations sprinkled across the country, but people outraged by the bet increase in number. Since giving birth is such a special and personal event in a women’s life many British Columbia residents claim that introducing gambling is not the right approach in this situation.

Attracting players and potentially paying out generous amounts of cash could increase the popularity of betting. However, as it often happens gambling is a controversial topic and tends to polarize the opinion like no other. The eventual winners and outcome are expected at the very beginning of January.
