Starting in 1997, the Winnipeg Jets joined the NHL as one of the newer teams. Stationed at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, they currently play in the Central Division of the Western Conference.

Their first performance came at the turn of the millennium, so they haven’t had a lot of opportunities to prove their worth. Unfortunately, in the time they’ve had, the former Atlanta Thrashers haven’t achieved much, even after changing their name. They’ve never won the Stanley Cup or the conference title. Their best achievement was winning the Southeast Division in 2006–07.

The Winnipeg Jets’ performance as of late has been solid, and they are often among the top teams in their division, making them worth keeping an eye on. Moreover, betting on them can often prove quite lucrative, as they are the underdogs in many situations.

Winnipeg Jets Betting Odds — Types of Bets

Bettors have a wide range of options when supporting any NHL team. From betting on a team to win to supporting a specific player to score a certain number of goals, the options are practically endless.

With that in mind, let’s look at the most popular wagers you are likely to use regularly.

Moneyline

The moneyline is the most straightforward bet and one you’ll use all the time. It allows you to wager on the home or away team to prevail, and if you are correct, you win the bet.

Let’s look at a hypothetical example so you can understand it easier. Consider a game between the Winnipeg Jets and the Detroit Red Wings. Here’s what you might see at a typical sportsbook:

  • Winnipeg Jets -229 (1.44)
  • Detroit Red Wings +213 (3.13)

In this example, the odds show us that the Winnipeg Jets are the favourites to win the matchup. We see that from the minus sign in front of the moneyline odds. The plus denotes the underdog. If you decide to back the Jets with $100, you stand to win a total of $143.67, or $43.67 in profit.

On the other hand, if you go for the underdog, the Detroit Red Wings, you can win as much as $313 or a profit of $213.

Puck Line (Point Spread)

The point spread, or the puck line as it’s called in NHL betting, evens out a matchup between a clear favourite and an underdog by adding a specific number of goals. In essence, the bet adds a margin, where the favourite needs to advance by a particular number of goals for you to win the bet. On the other hand, betting on the underdog becomes easier as they can win with fewer goals or even lose by a specific margin.

Here’s what it looks like in the same game we’ve used, with a 1.5 goal margin:

  • Winnipeg Jets -1.5 +115 (2.15)
  • Detroit Red Dogs +1.5 -122 (1.82)

The handicap has turned the tide of the game, and the Detroit Red Dogs are now the favourites, albeit only slightly. If you support them, you can win the bet even if they lose by a single goal. And if you decide to back the Winnipeg Jets, they need to win by at least two goals for you to win the wager.

The margin in these bets is typically 1.5, but it can be another number like 0.5, 2.5, 3.5, etc.

Totals (Over/Under Bets)

The totals allow you to predict a game’s combined number of goals. It’s also called the over/under bet because you must predict the total going above or under a specific number.

Here’s an example with the same game as before:

  • Over 5.5 -131 (1.76)
  • Under 5.5 +123 (2.23)

If you back the first option, the total number of goals in the game cannot be less than six, and if you bet under 5.5, the total has to be five or less.

60-Minute Line (Regulation Only)

The 60-minute line is the same as the moneyline bet, with one additional option — a draw. The reason for this is that you’re betting on the standard 60 minutes of a game, not the whole matchup, together with the overtime. As you likely know, an NHL game cannot end in a tie, but the 60 minutes can, which is why the wager lets you bet on three outcomes instead of the standard two.

This also changes the odds, as adding a third option makes betting on the other two slightly more lucrative. Just consider our example between the Winnipeg Jets and the Detroit Red Wings:

  • Home win -128 (1.78)
  • Draw +356 (4.56)
  • Away win +324 (4.24)

Remember that this bet is only for the three periods, meaning it doesn’t consider overtime. You need to predict the score at the end of 60 minutes to win.

Winnipeg Jets Props

Proposition bets are an entire collection of wagers that focus on specific events in a game, primarily team and player performance.

For example, you can bet on the number of goals a specific player will score, the number of goals one side will get in the first half, and many other options.

Futures

Futures are a selection of wagers that focus on upcoming events. In most cases, they involve betting on the team to win the Stanley Cup, a conference, or a specific division. Here’s how this might look for the Winnipeg Jets:

  • Winnipeg Jets to win the Central Division +3500 (36.00)
  • Winnipeg Jets to win the Western Conference +1800 (19.00)
  • Winnipeg Jets to win the Stanley Cup +4000 (41.00)

Parlays

Parlays allow you to combine multiple bets into one and benefit from higher odds. In other words, a parlay doesn’t combine the odds of every selection but multiplies them.

So, if you enter four selections with odds of 1.64, 1.70, 2.60, and 2.45, the odds for the whole bet will be 17.76 or +1676. If you were to stake $100 in this hypothetical scenario and win every selection, you’d make a total of $1,776, which is a profit of $1,676.

You must correctly predict every selection to win the parlay. So, even if one selection is incorrect, you’ll lose the entire wager.

Live Betting

Live betting is placing any kind of wager during a game. It largely involves the same bets as we’ve discussed here, with a few changes to account for the fact that the game is in progress.

In-play wagering is ideal for bettors looking to take advantage of changes in the field and benefit from better odds. However, as soon as something changes, the odds will automatically reflect that, so it’s important to be fast and have good intuition. If you’re experienced, you’re bound to win good money from live wagers.

Which Sportsbook Has the Best Odds on the Winnipeg Jets?

In all honesty, there’s never a single sportsbook that offers the best odds for any team in any sport. If you want to get the best odds, you need to do some odds shopping. In other words, you will have to check several sportsbooks to find the greatest odds on a specific bet.

For instance, to place a moneyline on the Winnipeg Jets, you must visit a dozen leading sportsbooks and pick one with the most favourable odds.

The differences between the platforms will be minuscule, but they add up over time, which is why seasoned bettors practice odds shopping.

You can do the research yourself or use odd comparison sites that display the odds from many sportsbooks in one place. They can save you time, but you’ll still have to create an account on your chosen sportsbook first.

Winnipeg Jets History

The Winnipeg Jets were established as the Atlanta Thrashers on June 25, 1997. Their first NHL appearance was in the 1999–2000 season, where they had the worst record of 14–57–7–4 for 39 points. The season remains the worst in the team’s history, where they scored 170 goals in total while conceding 313.

The next few seasons were much better, but their first notable result was winning the Southeast Division in 2007, also marking the first time they reached the playoffs. However, they lost in the conference quarterfinals 0–4 to the New York Rangers.

Their next playoff series was as the Winnipeg Jets in the 2014–15 season. They lost in the First Round 0–4 to the Anaheim Ducks.

The team’s best deep run was in the 2017–18 season. They managed to enter the playoffs and convincingly won the First Round against the Minnesota Wild. Then they defeated the Nashville Predators 4–3 but lost in the conference finals to the Vegas Golden Knights, 1–4. This remains their only conference final to date.

The 2021–22 season was one of the worst for the Winnipeg Jets. They finished as the 6th ranked team with a 39–32–11 record. It was the first time they didn’t enter the playoffs since the 2016–17 season.
