The New York Rangers, a pro hockey team from the Manhattan borough of New York City, has played in the NHL for almost a century. The team is currently based in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers are known for winning the Stanley Cup four times, most recently in the 1993-94 season, and three Presidents’ Trophies. Even though they haven’t won the cup in a while, betting on them is always exciting, as the Broadway Blueshirts are in the top three of their division and often in the playoffs.

If you want to place a bet or two on the Rangers, you’ll be glad to know that most Canadian sportsbooks allow you to do so. They provide excellent coverage of New York Rangers games and the NHL as a whole. But first, you need to check out the basics.

New York Rangers Betting Odds — Types of Bets

The best thing about betting on the New York Rangers is that there is a wide range of bets. You can bet on them to win, to lose, to reach a certain number of goals, and even how many goals Chris Kreider will score in a single game.

Plenty of wager types are available, but we’ll cover the most popular and most useful ones below. We’ll provide detailed explanations for each that will help you understand them if you’re new to NHL betting.

Moneyline

The moneyline is the most straightforward and popular wager an NHL bettor can place on the Rangers or any other team. It’s pretty simple and allows you to pick one or the other side to win a game. This is how it would look in a typical sportsbook for a hypothetical game between the Rangers and the Penguins:

  • New York Rangers -147 (1.68)
  • Pittsburgh Penguins +115 (2.15)

Bear in mind that we are using both American (moneyline) and European (decimal) odds, while the sportsbook will show either one or the other.

Whatever the case, in our example, the Rangers are the favourites, evident by the minus sign in front of the moneyline odds and the lower number in the decimal odds. The plus sign denotes the underdog.

If you support the New York Rangers and stake $50, you could win $34.01, while the total payout would be $84.01.

On the other hand, if you support the underdog with the same amount, you’re on your way to gaining a profit of $57.50, with a total payout of $107.50.

As always, betting on the underdog is more profitable but less likely.

Puck Line (Point Spread)

The puck line, or point spread as it’s called in most other sports, is a bet that lets you wager on a margin of victory. In other words, you need to predict who will win or lose with an added handicap of a specific number of goals, like 2.5.

Here’s how it might look in a sportsbook using the same game as before:

  • New York Rangers -2.5 +260 (3.60)
  • Pittsburgh Penguins +2.5 -400 (1.25)

Because of the considerable handicap, the Penguins have become clear favourites in this example. They can lose by up to two goals, and you would still win the bet. Moreover, if you support the Rangers, they must triumph by at least three goals for you to win. For instance, you’ll lose if they win 3:1, as the difference is only two goals.

Naturally, the payouts are much higher for the New York Rangers. If you stake $50 on them, you will get a profit of $130.00, or $180.00 in total. And if you wagered on the Pittsburgh Penguins, you’d win only $12.50, with the total payout being $62.50.

60-Minute Line (Regulation Only)

The 60-minute line is a wager exclusive to the NHL. It is named for how long a regular game lasts and lets you predict the result at the end of the three periods, not the whole game. As an NHL matchup cannot end in a tie, this bet gives you the draw option instead of just a home or away win.

This means the odds are typically higher on a 60-minute line bet compared to the moneyline. In our previous example with the Rangers and Penguins, this is what you’d get in a sportsbook:

  • Home win +108 (2.08)
  • Draw +310 (4.10)
  • Away win +180 (2.80)

As you can see, the home or Rangers win is now less likely, because we’ve introduced a third outcome. If you bet $50 on them, you’ll stand to gain a profit of $54. If you do the same on the Penguins, you will earn $90 and $155 if you wager on a draw.

Totals (Over/Under Bets)

The totals or over/under wager allows bettors to predict the total number of goals in a game. More specifically, you need to accurately predict the number going above or staying under a specific figure.

Let’s say that number is 5.5, meaning you get two options. You can bet on the under 5.5 option, and the game needs to end with five goals or less, or you can support the over 5.5 option, where the final tally needs to be six or more. Here’s how this bet would look in a sportsbook:

  • Over 5.5 -217 (1.46)
  • Under 5.5 +155 (2.55)

The over 5.5 option, in this case, is more likely, and if you wager $50 on it, you’ll stand to make a $23.04 profit. If you think there will be five or fewer goals, then the $50 stake will yield you a profit of $77.50.

Futures (Outrights)

Futures or outrights allow bettors to predict events far in the future, not a day or two like most other bets.

Typically, an outright will let you predict the winner of a championship, like the Stanley Cup in our instance. Here are the most common outright bets you can place on the New York Rangers in 2023:

  • New York Rangers to win the Stanley Cup +1300 (14.00)
  • New York Rangers to win the Eastern Conference +600 (7.00)
  • New York Rangers to win the Metropolitan Division +4000 (41.00)

Parlays

Parlays are collections of two or more different wagers. You get to group several bets, significantly increasing your total odds since the odds for each selection are multiplied.

For example, if you place a parlay with three selections with odds of -110, +150, and -180, the total would be +642. Consequently, if you were to stake $50, you’d stand to win $321.20.

However, remember that you must win every selection for the parlay to pass. That makes them harder to win but more profitable, as you can see.

New York Rangers Props

Proposition bets or props allow you to predict specific events typically connected to player or team performance.

For example, you can bet the number of goals a player will score, how many penalties will occur in a matchup, or something else.

Who Has the Best Odds on the New York Rangers?

No single sports betting site has the best odds on the Rangers or any other team. It depends on a specific market and what that particular sportsbook has decided to give.

That’s why it’s necessary to look into each market separately. To find the best odds, you need to check several leading sportsbooks. One or a few will have higher numbers than the rest, and you need to stick to them if you want to have the biggest profits.

This is time-consuming but worthwhile, as these slight differences between sportsbooks add up over time and after placing several dozen wagers.

To save time, you can use odds comparison sites like Oddspedia, Oddschecker, Odds Portal, and Easyodds. They list the odds from all popular sports betting sites for any given market, so it’s easier to find the best numbers.

New York Rangers History

The Rangers were established in 1926, making them one of the Original Six that played in the NHL before 1967. This includes the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Montreal Canadiens.

The team was quite successful at first, winning the 1928 Stanley Cup Finals. They did the same two more times by the start of the 40s when they began struggling to achieve that same level of greatness.

They had a few good years in the 70s, but with extensive rebuilds in the late 80s and early 90s, they finally got back and won their fourth Stanley Cup in 1994.

After some ups and downs in the late 90s and all the way to the early 2010s, the Rangers have finally found a middle ground where we often see them in the playoffs.

The 2021-22 season was especially good for them as they recorded 52 wins, their highest since 2014-15. They ended last season in second place in the Metropolitan Division and had a good playoff run, winning two series, first against the Pittsburgh Penguins and then the Carolina Hurricanes. They lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Conference Finals.
