Charlotte Hornets compete in the NBA’s Eastern Conference and are among the five teams in the Southeast Division. Despite being one of the least successful franchises in league history, the Hornets are a beloved team, rocking retro-style jerseys and having one of the coolest mascots. Plus, they are owned by “His Airness” — Michael Jordan.
Good or bad, each NBA team plays through 82 regular season games, and each game presents an opportunity to profit. If you’re looking to learn more about Charlotte Hornets betting odds, you’ve come to the right place, as we’ll explain how betting on this NBA team works and what sort of basketball bets you can take on Canadian betting sites.
Charlotte Hornets Betting Odds — Types of Bets
A top-tier betting site should feature dozens of bets on any Hornets game. The range of bets typically includes anything from simple wagers, like whether Charlotte will win or lose, to all sorts of micro in-play bets, such as whether the next field goal will be a two-pointer or a three-pointer. Of course, you can also get action on the Hornets’ season-long success, betting on them to reach the playoffs or to make an upset and win the championship.
Moneyline
The moneyline bet in basketball refers to betting on the winning team. You can bet on the Hornets or their opponent to win the game, including overtime.
The team favoured to win is assigned negative odds, while the underdogs have positive odds. For instance, if the Hornets are underdogs against the Miami Heat with odds of +200, a $100 bet on Charlotte will win you $200. In contrast, the moneyline odds on the Heat are -150, which implies that you need a $150 stake to gain a $100 profit.
Point Spread
The point spread is the great equalizer that can make even the most predictable NBA games interesting to bet on. The Hornets are expected to lose in Boston against the Celtics, but the spread can make things a bit more challenging.
For example, if you bet on the Hornets with a point spread of +11.5, you can win the bet even if they lose, as long as they lose by 11 or fewer points. Alternatively, if you were to bet on the Celtics to cover the spread, they would need to win by 12 or more. The odds are usually close to -110 on either side of the point spread market.
Totals (Over/Under)
The totals market focuses on the sum of the points scored by two teams rather than the winner or the margin of victory.
If the totals line in a Charlotte game is 225.5, you can bet on whether the number of points will be over or under that line. Like the spread, the odds here will be approximately -110 on either side, but top-tier sportsbooks also offer alternative totals for every game, letting you choose a safer or riskier over/under bet. Mind that the totals market includes all the points scored in overtime.
Futures
Most betting sites have NBA futures markets, challenging you to estimate how a team will do throughout an entire season. Outright winner is the most popular futures bet, and it involves picking the champion. Betting on conference and division champions is also an option.
You can make other futures bets on the Charlotte Hornets, like predicting the over/under on their season win total or guessing whether the team will make the playoffs. NBA futures markets also consist of picking individual award winners, like the MVP, MIP, ROTY, DPOY, COTY, 6MOY, and others.
Prop Bets
Proposition bets are wagers that relate to specific game occurrences. For example, you can bet on the Hornets to be the first to reach 100 points in a game or for them to lose the game to the Toronto Raptors by a margin of between three and six points.
Some other props you may run into include team totals, the team with the highest scoring quarter, total points odd/even, player points over/under, first quarter three-way moneyline, and dozens more.
Live Betting
Live betting allows you to bet on the Charlotte Hornets while the game is in play. You’ll find the same range of bets as in the pre-game period, with a few extra live props, like who will score the next basket or which team will be the first to reach 20 points in the current quarter.
Live bets are open from the opening tip all the way to the finish. The odds change in real time and reflect the situation on the floor. For example, if the Hornets had a +4.5 spread against the Sixers before the game but are leading by seven points coming into the fourth quarter, the spread could be shifted to -1.5, as the Hornets are now favourites to win the game.
Mind that most of the futures markets will be closed while the games are taking place.
Parlays
Parlays are multi-bets where the goal is to guess two or more selections for a bigger profit. For instance, you can bet on the Charlotte Hornets to beat the Washington Wizards and the Toronto Raptors to cover the -6.5 spread against the Detroit Pistons. Getting this parlay right will result in a higher profit than if you were to take those bets as singles, but if you miss only one of the selections, you will lose the wager.
Same-game parlays are a relatively new concept on Canadian betting sites. This option allows you to combine bets from the same event. You can bet on the Hornets’ moneyline, over on total points, and for LaMelo Ball to record more than 7.5 assists.
Who Has the Best Odds on the Charlotte Hornets?
Every sportsbook has its own formula for creating odds, which is why pricing can differ between sites. Sportsbook A may have the Hornets at +250, while Sportsbook B has them at +280 to win a game. While these differences may seem insignificant when looked at individually, they can accumulate over time. In other words, if you always bet with the best odds, you will maximize your profit potential.
Scanning all available betting sites to find the best Charlotte Hornets odds is a daunting task, but you can save a ton of time if you visit our NBA odds comparison page. Another thing to look out for is odds boosts. A betting site may enhance the pricing on selected games and markets, and NBA odds boosts are pretty common.
Charlotte Hornets History
Charlotte Hornets are one of the four expansion teams that joined the NBA in 1988 (Miami, Orlando, and Minneapolis were also granted franchises that year).
Like most new franchises, the Hornets struggled in their first few seasons before landing a few high picks in the 1991 and 1992 NBA drafts, which they used to select Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning. The team had their first winning season and secured a 1993 playoff berth, upsetting the Boston Celtics in the first round but eventually losing to the New York Knicks. In 1995, the Hornets were knocked out by the revitalized Chicago Bulls.
Soon followed the Glen Rice era when the team had their best regular season record up until that point and made their first back-to-back playoff appearances. However, the Knicks and the Bulls stopped them again from going past the first couple of rounds. In 1996, the Hornets picked Kobe Bryant as the 13th overall pick but traded him on draft night for Vlade Divac, which was, in hindsight, one of their biggest missed opportunities.
The Hornets reached the playoffs in 2000, 2001, and 2002 but failed to go past the conference semifinals in each attempt. The franchise was moved to New Orleans in 2002 due to low game attendance, while Charlotte got a new team in 2004 — Charlotte Bobcats. The Bobcats were largely unsuccessful in their 10-year existence. The team was acquired by Michael Jordan in 2010 but soon had the worst record in NBA history in the 2011/12 season (7–59). In 2014, Charlotte again changed their name to Charlotte Hornets.
The period between 2011 and 2019 was marked by Charlotte’s superstar Kemba Walker who grew to become one of the league’s best point guards. Still, there was a lack of playoff success. The team only made two postseason appearances in the last ten years, losing both times in the first round.
