NY Organization Launches New Problem Gambling Campaign

This week, the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports announced that it will be kicking off a new campaign to help locals with problem gambling. The name of the campaign is “Stick to the Game Plan”, which aims to raise awareness for compulsive gambling and how bettors can prevent any harmful effects from it. This program will run through April 1, 2022.

“Stick to the Game Plan” is a multi-faceted campaign that will be broadcasted on radio and social media channels in an attempt to help gamblers prevent unwanted gambling addictions of any sort. It will provide gambling fans with some tips and emphasize other problems that can occur when one is in the state of a compulsive gambler.

Help in Battling Addictions

Commissioner of the organization, Chinazo Cunningham spoke on the new campaign. She explained that as gambling options in the state increase, it is important to remind people of the importance of responsible gaming and provide them with directions on how to avoid risks of developing addictions. The expert also noted that it is also useful for parents to discuss the issue with their children.

Ms. Cunningham stated that this new campaign will provide people with the tools they need to help prevent compulsive gambling disorders, as well as offer guidelines on how to seek help if they need it. The campaign will run through April 1, 2022, and will be broadcasted on radio platforms and social media. There are also videos on YouTube, that people can watch.

The organization’s “Stick to the Game Plan” will offer responsible gaming advice such as setting limits on the amount of time and money a player plans on spending while gambling. One more example of a useful tip is for gamblers is to limit the use of alcohol and other substances while wagering. And also reminding that gambling is not for individuals under 21.

In addition to that, the campaign also guides people who experience such compulsive gambling disorders, on how to find help. People can call the NYS HOPELine by dialling (877) 8-HOPENY (877-846-7369) or by texting HOPENY (short code 467369) or contact the New York state’s regional Problem Gambling Resource Centers. And for people who have a loved one that needs help, the CHAMP helpline at (888) 614-5400 or [email protected].

Risks Increases with More Options

At the start of this year, The New York State Council on Problem Gambling started to prepare for the launch of mobile sports betting in the state. The organization stated that as offering in the state increase, gambling addiction will become more and more common among players. It also requested a much bigger budget of around US$20 million in order to tackle the issue.

Lottery for Minors Campaign

Recently even more Empire State organizations have kicked off campaigns on problem gambling. For instance, in December 2021, New York’s Responsible Play Partnership launched a brand-new public service campaign that is designed to raise awareness for the downside of gifting lottery products to minors named “Responsibility is Always a Bright Idea”. This campaign’s purpose was to remind people that lottery tickets should not be gifted to minors.
