Single-event sports betting in Canada might be closer than players think, as action as once again commenced. A new private member bill introduced by Conservative MP Kevin Waugh will aim to make it possible for Canadians to place bets on single sport events. This bill also aims to make the country more competitive when it comes to sports wagering.
For quite a while, single-event sports betting in Canada has been among the goals of many MPs, seeking a way in which they could make the local gaming industry more competitive and to keep local players from making their way south where they can place legal single-event sports wagers. Earlier this fall, the government was prorogued, which introduced yet another delay.

Recently it became clear that sports wagering efforts are going to be renewed before the Canadian Parliament returns, as for years the country has been stalling in this area. Conservative MP Kevin Waugh is ready to fight for single-event sports wagering in Canada, as this will make the country more competitive to the United States and other countries allowing this type of betting.
It is no secret that Windsor West MP Brian Masse has been among the main supporters of this bill, promoting a modern gambling perspective for the people of Canada and being a breath of fresh air for the gambling field. Back in September, when the prorogue was announced, MP Masse expressed his concern with the way things go and the further delay of his plans of introducing something new for the people of Canada. Efforts in this direction date back to 2011.
Back then, former Windsor-Tecumseh MP, Joe Comarti supported a bill that aimed to make single-event sports wagering reality for Canadians. His efforts did not bring the results expected, but they continue to this day with tons of support expressed by various organizations, as well as the people of Canada.

Mr. Masse said that this change in the way locals gamble could be legalized with a simple signature in one swift move. Him and Kevin Waugh are in a bipartisan partnership with private member’s Bill C-218. As they put it, the time to act is now and every day without action towards legalizing single-event sports wagering equals more money lost.
Canadian individuals often make their way south of the border and place single-event wagers in some of the border states of the US. New York State is one of these locations. This deprives the provinces from substantial gaming revenue flow. There is also the unregulated black-market sports betting within the borders of Canada, which also harms the legal gambling field. The House of Commons will soon showcase its position when it comes to the bill.
David Cassidy, the president of Unifor local 444, said that projections are that when all is said and done, single-event sports betting in Canada could receive the ultimate approval of the Senate next year. This will make it possible for the spring months to witness it become legal, reaching a major milestone for Canada’s gambling field.
